April 23 Campaign Update

"(This event) should cause us to ask the difficult questions about how we can get families more involved in schools, get schools more open to full involvement, how we can create what Dr. King called 'the beloved community,' how we can limit the wide and easy availability of guns to young people, how we can deal with these cult hate sites on the Internet that these kids apparently got involved with. These and other questions are ones that we have to address on an urgent basis."

-- Vice President Al Gore, on the Littleton, Colorado school shootings, on CNN's "Larry King Live", April 21, 1999

2. New Numbers

Two national polls released this week show Vice President Al Gore with a sizeable lead over challenger Bill Bradley. A NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released today shows the Vice President leading Bradley by 39 points (62% - 23%). A Reuters/Zogby poll released yesterday shows an even larger lead of 43 points (65%-22%). While it’s still early and we have a lot of campaigning to do, this is a good indication of where Al Gore stands among Democrats.

4. Tragedy in Colorado

Vice President and Mrs. Gore had the opportunity to express their feelings on the tragic shootings in Littleton, Colorado. The Vice President told CNN's Larry King (Larry King Live, 4/21) "I think that as this community inspires the nation with its tremendous support of the families that are going through this terrible experience, I think all of us... want to do everything we can to lift them up in prayer and find the healing and the wholeness that they need."

Mrs. Gore added "I think this is a wake-up call to all Americans, to parents, and also to other teenagers, because they often are the first to know who is the most troubled and they need to be supported. They need to have a place to go to: an adult, a mental health center. And so I would like, if anything comes out of this in terms of strengthening communities and families, I would like to see more access to mental health."
